-- Baltimore based five-piece nu-jazz combo ![]() Lake Trout formed in 1994 as an improvisational instrumental jazz band. After securing a solid reputation on the local club circuit, vocalist Woody Ranere was added, resulting in a more traditional rock lineup and sound. One of Baltimore’s true treasures is Lake Trout. No, not the deep-fried fish, but rather, the most talked about and beloved band based in Charm City. Arguably the most innovative band on the East Coast, and quite possibly in the U.S., Lake Trout incorporates live break beats and drum n’ bass elements with jazz, rock, and pop sensibilities for a captivating urban groove. An original and sophisticated sound that they like to call ‘Organica’; that is, a dance-floor groove rooted in the traditional live music presentation, but is not limited in concept or structure, subverting pre-conceived notions regarding musical boundaries. Lake Trout have created a truly unique genre-busting sound and vision that goes beyond the trappings of the standard rock n roll formula. The current Lake Trout sound evolved from their formation as a jazz ensemble. Exploring and remaining open to new music ideas they consciously seek to redefine and reshape their music, successfully transcending categorization, while sustaining a solid and expanding fan base. A growing reputation for their spirited improvisational live performances has led to Lake Trout being one of the East Coast’s most in demand live acts. They have performed alongside such diverse artists as Soul Coughing, John Scofield, Maceo Parker, Sugar Ray, Everlast, and Dieselboy. ![]() With a heavy tour schedule, one-off appearances at clubs and raves around the country, three nights at Rome’s "Villa Celimontana Jazz Fest"(representing New York’s legendary Knitting Factory), and two incredibly successful trips to Japan, one would wonder when Lake Trout has time for the studio. While their critically acclaimed full length album, Volume for the Rest of It (SNS Records) continues to gain commercial success, Lake Trout has captured their live experience for their latest release, Alone At Last (Phoenix Presents). Building upon an appreciation and understanding of DJ culture, Lake Trout’s performances are freeform, drawing energy and direction from the audience and atmosphere surrounding the band. Recorded 100% live on December 9, 1999 at TRAXX in Charlottesville VA, Alone At Last highlights the spontaneous composition of their live set, yet maintains the focus and audio quality of their studio sessions. The Village Voice’s Richard Gehr writes " Lake Trout are sometimes stunningly ferocious space sculptors capable of realigning your polarities in a region where LTJ Bukem dreams of Pink Floyd." The Baltimore City Paper’s Lee Garndner writes, " ..the band has entered an unpredictable space, where a mere crowd-pleasing song gets turned into a dubby texture jam and segues into a trance-y drum ‘n’ bass number. Several minutes along in the live set’s nearly seamless flow, the band is doing its damnedest to somehow blend soaring-sea-gull guitar and clattering mechanized beats and roller-coastering into a dreamy, spacey instrumental."
